Clear Up Your Skin for Summer!

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Acne is one of the most common conditions we treat, but you might be surprised who is seeking treatment.  Most of our acne patients fall into two categories: teenage boys and women in their 20’s to 30’s.  The common misconception is that women will “grow out of it” when they hit their twenties, however more often than that tends to be the age when many women begin to notice breakouts.

It’s important to have a good skin care regimen when dealing with acne.  In addition to topical and oral medications that can be prescribed by your dermatologist, we offer the following recommendations for acne prone patients:

DermSD Deep Cleanse- The soap that you use to wash your body just isn’t gonna cut it when it comes to your face, especially when you’re battling breakouts!  We recommend Deep Cleanse, an all natural facial cleanser free of parabens and petrochemicals.

DermSD Clarity- Clarity is an all natural acne and oily skin serum that decreases oil production and works to clear up and restore healthy skin.  Phoshpatidylcholine, one of the key ingredients in Clarity, allows prescription topicals to better penetrate the skin, increasing the efficacy of the topicals.

DermSD Recover- Leftover red marks are commonly associated with breakouts.  All natural Recover helps to resolve redness more quickly and calms inflamed, irritated skin.

Revision Hydrating Serum- Even acneic patients need moisturization.  It may seem counter intuitive- if I have oily skin, why would I want to add to my oiliness by using moisturizer?  If skin becomes too dry, it over compensates by producing more oil.  In order to keep a healthy balance, we offer Revision Hydrating Serum.  The Hydrating Serum is 100% oil free, is ultra lightweight  and instantly absorbs into the skin.

Zap Acne With Laser Treatment

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Fighting acne? Traditional therapies not cutting it?  Laser and light treatments have been used successfully for years to reduce acne breakouts, reduce oil production, tighten pores, and reduce depressed, acne scars.

If you’re new to the idea of lasers to treatment acne, here is a brief description:

Vbeam laser- helps reduce redness

Smoothbeam laser- reduces sebum (oil) production and to stimulate collagen production to help fill in depressed scars

BLU-U light- targets and kills P. acnes bacteria associated with inflammatory acne

Any of the above treatments can be used alone, or together, to fight acne on virtually any part of the body- safely.  Treatment with the Vbeam and Smoothbeam lasers are safe to do while taking oral antibiotics- in fact, the combination is very succesful. Laser treatment is an effective treatment consideration for those who are opposed to antibiotics or Accutane.

Botox Has Increased Popularity Among Men

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

BROTOX- as defined by Urban Dictionary, “botox when used on a male, usually something he doesn’t want you to know about.”

Brotox may be a corny term, but corniness aside, treatments such as Botox, Dysport, and the newest competitor, Xeomin, are gaining popularity among men.  Vanity isn’t just for the ladies anymore!  Men are looking for ways to preserve their youthful apperance as well.

According to a report featured on Good Morning America (By SUZANNE YEO), gifting Botox for men was all the rage for the holidays.  According to the report, “Last year, more than 300,000 men  got Botox… That is a 10% increase from the previous year.”  It would seem that men aren’t trying to go for a fully frozen look, but rather something more subtle.  A Miami area plastic surgeon interviewed in the piece says the trend among men is to “soften up this look to just give a more approachable appearance.”

So the next time you notice that distinguished gentleman next to you, you’ll never know if he’s just aging gracefully, or if he had a little help from the tox!!
